Viviamo in un mondo sempre più digitalizzato e interconnesso, e gli strumenti basati sull'intelligenza artificiale hanno fatto furore non appena sono diventati disponibili al grande pubblico, affermandosi come una potente risorsa in molte aree, tra cui la lingua e la traduzione. ChatGPT, sviluppato da OpenAI, ha stupito molti per come ha dimostrato che l’IA può essere utilizzata per generare testi coerenti e perfino conversazioni in linguaggio naturale, arrivando a simulare in maniera quasi indistinguibile un essere umano nel modo di esprimersi. Questo ha fatto ipotizzare a molti che uno strumento tanto potente fosse in grado di svolgere anche altri compiti linguistici, come la conversione di un contenuto complesso da una lingua ad un’altra. Ma ChatGPT può realmente sostituirsi ad un'impresa professionale di traduzioni, dandoci risultati della stessa qualità e affidabilità? Andiamo a scoprirlo.
ChatGPT è un modello di linguaggio avanzato sviluppato da OpenAI, basato sull'architettura transformer, ossia un tipo di rete neurale progettato per elaborare dati sequenziali, come il linguaggio naturale. Il suo design lo rende particolarmente adatto a interpretare e generare testi; svolge questo compito analizzando il contesto delle parole o delle frasi che gli vengono fornite come input, e basandosi sull’addestramento che ha ricevuto e che è consistito nell’interpretazione di una vastissima gamma di dati prelevati da Internet. Questo gli permette di generare risposte che sono spesso indistinguibili da quelle che un essere umano potrebbe fornire, per quanto appaiono naturali e competenti. C’è però un dato fondamentale che non è intuitivo, e che potremmo non cogliere se non esplicitato: per quanto sia sofisticato e complesso, ChatGPT non comprende assolutamente il significato del testo che genera nel modo in cui lo comprenderebbe un essere umano. Quello che fa è utilizzare modelli statistici, che applica alle sequenze di parole che ha analizzato durante la propria formazione per predire la sequenza di parole più probabilmente corretta da usare in risposta ad un input esterno.
Poiché ChatGPT è stato esposto ad esempi di traduzioni da una lingua all’altra nel corso del suo addestramento, è genericamente in grado – è stato dimostrato - di tradurre frasi semplici in maniera corretta e convincente. Questo non significa però in alcun modo che sia stato specificamente addestrato per essere un traduttore, e questo fa tutta la differenza non appena passiamo a traduzioni più complesse. Tuttavia, la traduzione è un compito molto difficile e strutturato, che richiede sia una conoscenza teorica della grammatica e del lessico delle lingue coinvolte (dati che ChatGPT potrebbe anche teoricamente acquisire) che una comprensione profonda delle sfumature linguistiche, dei contesti culturali e degli idiomi, tutti elementi che un sistema come ChatGPT non può in alcun modo garantire di possedere. Questo è particolarmente evidente appena tentiamo di usarlo per tradurre testi di natura tecnica, legale, o in qualche modo altamente specializzata: in questi esperimenti notiamo immediatamente come un traduttore umano professionale, con una comprensione profonda sia della lingua sorgente che della lingua target, sia infinitamente più affidabile per svolgere questo genere di traduzioni.
Le imprese di traduzioni professionali offrono una gamma di servizi che vanno ben oltre la traduzione letterale di un testo da una lingua all'altra. I traduttori professionisti di cui si servono hanno una padronanza fluente delle lingue con cui lavorano, una comprensione profonda dei contesti culturali e specialistici, e un'attenta considerazione per il tono, lo stile e il significato del testo originale. Questa specifica combinazione di competenze e anche di sensibilità specifiche e coltivate nel tempo e con l’esperienza è quella che consente loro di fornire traduzioni precise e di alta qualità che rispettano l'intento del testo originale, e rappresenta qualcosa che al momento non assolutamente alla portata di sistemi di IA come ChatGPT.
Ci sono almeno due ragioni essenziali per cui un'impresa di traduzione professionale si dimostra preferibile a ChatGPT per la traduzione di documenti.
La prima di queste ragioni riguarda la precisione e il contesto. Un traduttore umano è in grado di comprendere il contesto di un testo, interpretare gli idiomi e cogliere le sfumature culturali. Questi sono aspetti del linguaggio che un sistema di IA può facilmente fraintendere o trascurare, poiché interpreta il linguaggio basandosi su modelli statistici, e non attraverso una vera e propria comprensione. E per tradurre un testo da cui magari dipende la salute, o il lavoro, o la professione di qualcuno è decisamente importante assicurarsi che non ci siano elementi “impalpabili” che vengono ignorati.
In secondo luogo, le imprese di traduzione professionale offrono spesso servizi di revisione e controllo qualità. Questi servizi assicurano che la traduzione non si limiti ad essere solo corretta e accurata, il che rappresenta il minimo che si possa pretendere, ma che sia anche ben scritta e priva di errori grammaticali o di ortografia. I sistemi come ChatGPT possono essere in grado di generare testi che genericamente potremmo anche trovare corretti, ma non sono immuni dagli errori e non dispongono di alcun meccanismo integrato per correggere o rivedere il lavoro svolto: affidare all’IA una traduzione significa tuffarsi alla cieca, sperando che non commetta errori che non siamo in grado di notare, perché altrimenti questi non verranno corretti.
